Take a few moments and say the following sentences to yourself in a very nasty voice:

▪ “I’m such a loser – always have been and you always will be!”

▪“I hate myself”

▪ “I’m looking old and ugly”

Now, take a moment and say the following in a very enthusiastic and positive voice:

“I am special because there is no one else exactly like me”

“I really like my smile”

“There is so much potential out there for me”.

Who's inside your head?

Whether we like to admit it or not, we all have an internal dialogue of some sort in our heads.  We have debates, we procrastinate and we even argue with ourselves (who wins?  I’m not so sure…).  There is nothing wrong with having an internal dialogue, as it is the way we come to make decisions.  Some decide fast, some take time to think things through and others can never decide.  In fact, as I am writing this next sentence I am in the process of deciding what to say next.  This is great because, it’s a sure sign of thinking and processing using my own internal and helpful dialogue.

However, where we tend to go wrong is when we feed ourselves polluted and toxic language which not only prevents us from progress, but paralyzes our innate desire for growth.  It lowers our self-worth and overall confidence to the point of self-loathing.  This reminds me of a client I once had who wanted to refresh her life and maximize on her vast potential.  Within a very short space of time, she voluntarily admitted to being extremely self critical.

From the moment she work up she started to complain about the bags under her eyes, the size of her rear end, the way she looked in her clothes, her hair and her performance at work.  Not only was she critically complaining, but using a very nasty tone of voice (in her own mind) that made her feel as small as a Hamster.

The Language of Stress

Naturally,  this was the primary cause of distress in her life.  As I’ve mentioned before, beliefs start with a thought.  Now, when you repeat a thought over and over again, it becomes a belief then a conviction – and then it all goes downhill!

To put it quite simply, language to your mind is what food is to your body.  If you eat unhealthy junk that is saturated in fat, salt, sugar and chemicals; your physical health will suffer.  The very same principal applies to your emotional (or mental) health.  If you feed your mind critical, cruel and negative language, how could you possibly feel fulfilled, lively and optimistic?  It simply doesn’t make sense.  In fact, sense and logic have nothing to do with this phenomenon, as it is imagination that is more overpowering and potent than logic.

This voice we create in our mind is imaginary, but the impact it has is very real.  As such, it is vital that not only we change the language we feed our minds, but also the tonality we use.  As Cheri Huber once said:

“That voice inside your head is not the voice of God - it just sounds like it thinks it is”.

You are the one in control of what you feed your own mind, not this voice.

Making Change Happen

So, take a conscious decision this very moment to go on a negativity fast.  Only state the positive in yourself, and around you.  Change the tonality of the voice in your mind into a nurturing and supportive one that makes you feel great.

Finally, remember to be your own best friend.  If you’re low and feeling down, take the role of a best friend and feed yourself good clean language that will put you on track again.  As Robert Byrne once said: “The purpose of life is a life of purpose”, so focus on your purpose and make it happen……
