“To Confine our attention to terrestrial matters would be to limit the human spirit.”- Stephen W. Hawking

A true sleeper hit, What the Bleep? is an independently funded and distributed film/documentary about quantum physics, featuring a series of PHD scientists; made for only $5 million, and released in only one cinema hired by the producers [no-one would take it], and became the US word-of-mouth cult phenomenon of 2004.

Still showing in at least 60 US cinemas after its release in Feb 04, taking, this award winning hybrid documentary is still on the top 50 film list, and it is bleeping its way across to the UK in May.

When the invitation came through my email box to attend the premier at Coronet Cinema in Notting Hill, I could not wait to see it. I have heard about it so much form my friend and teacher, Merryn José in New York, who has been raving about it since it was released in America.

Fred Alan Wolf, Ph.D.The film is a phenomenon in itself, the first feature of its kind to have audiences not only applauding at the end of the film, but also immediately turning round to discuss it with the rest of the audience.

In America it sparked a wave of revolution, giving people the opportunity to quiz their very take on reality. The American web site (see end of this article) supports this new reality (or lifestyle), creating a community hub, providing articles, discussion forums, t-shirts, book of Bleeps, and advise on how to create your life one day at a time, etc.

Quantum Physics In Every Day Life

Part documentary, part narrative, What the Bleep? blends elaborate visual effects and animation with interviews on themes as diverse as quantum physics, biochemistry, psychology and spirituality. The film asks the audience to consider the most fundamental of questions:

Brain neural-netsWhat am I doing here? What are thoughts made of? What is reality? The film subverts established ideals of religion, the self, and the ‘reality’ in which we all believe ourselves to exist.

Combining interviews with quantum physicists, academics and alternative spiritualists, What the Bleep offers the suggestion that as individuals we can all control our physical and emotional environment through positive thinking. However, far from being an unsupported New Age theory based on blind faith, What The Bleep offers proven examples of actual life changing experiences and the scientific theory to support them.

How far down the rabbit hole do you want to go?

MArlee MatlinBest Actress Academy Award winner Marlee Matlin (Children of a Lesser God, The West Wing) plays depressed wedding photographer, Amanda, who has a modern day Alice in Wonderland experience when a chance encounter throws her mundane daily uninspired life into chaos, revealing the uncertain world of the quantum field hidden behind what we consider to be our normal, waking reality.

She is literally plunged into a swirl of chaotic occurrences, while the characters she encounters on this odyssey reveal the deeper, hidden knowledge she doesn’t even realize she has asked for.

Like every hero, Amanda is thrown into crisis, questioning the fundamental premises of her life – that the reality she has believed in about how men are, how relationships with others should be, and how her emotions are affecting her work isn’t reality at all!

As Amanda learns to relax into the experience, she conquers her fears, gains wisdom, and wins the keys to the great secrets of the ages, all in the most entertaining way. She is then no longer the victim of circumstances, but she is on the way to being the creative force in her life. Her life will never be the same.

The Scientists

Dr. Masaru Emoto The people who were interviewed in What the #$*! Do We Know?! were chosen based on a number of criteria: books they’d written that were read by the filmmakers, lectures and presentations that they’d given which had been attended by various of the filmmakers, and recommendations by others in the experts’ respective fields.

The fourteen top scientists and mystics interviewed in documentary style serve as a modern day Greek Chorus. In an artful filmic dance, their ideas are woven together as a tapestry of truth. The thoughts and words of one member of the chorus blend into those of the next, adding further emphasis to the film’s underlying concept of the interconnectedness of all things.

Dr. William TillerThe chorus members act as hosts who live outside of the story, and from this Olympian view, comment on the actions of the characters below. They are also there to introduce the Great Questions framed by both science and religion, which divides the film into a series of acts. Through the course of the film, the distinction between science and religion becomes increasingly blurred, since we realize that, in essence, both science and religion describe the same phenomena.

The Animation

whatthebleep.comThe film employs animation to realize the radical knowledge that modern science has unearthed in recent years. Powerful cinematic sequences explore the inner-workings of the human brain.

Quirky animation introduces us to the smallest form of consciousness in the body – the cell. Dazzling visuals reinforce the film’s message in an exciting, powerful way.

Done with humour, precision, and irreverence, these scenes are only part of what makes this film unique.

The Idea

The out-of-the-box idea for such a project originated with Arntz, who went from studying physics in college to developing lasers for a company associated with the U.S. government. He then left behind his career in technology in favour of a journey toward spiritual awakening, Chasse says.

Amanda, as played by Marlee Matlin, faces herself as another quantum potential "Mark called me, and at the time, I was on the verge of bankruptcy," Chasse recalls. "He said, 'I want you to look at this project. I didn't consider myself a spiritual person, and I don't know anything about science. But the ideas and concepts in the script blew my mind." The film's surprise success has Arntz thinking about a new reality. He is talking with TV executives about a quantum physics network. "There are a lot of (quantum physics) followers out there," he says. "Who wouldn't tune into The Dalai Lama Hour?"

This is an inspiring and thought provoking docu-movie, a ‘must see’ for all concerned with understanding personal reality, and expanding their awareness. Film released on May 20th nationwide in the UK. Look out for review in Prediction Magazine May issue.
