Article fist appeared in Prediction Magazine, March 05, page 19.

Cast your mind back to your childhood. What is the first memory that leaps into your mind? The chances are that it is a happy one. This month, I would like to focus on the child-like self within us.

Did you ever wonder whether we were born already enlightened, and that life and what happens in it dims us- so we spend the rest of our lives trying to get enlightened- again! Even as fully grown adults, the ‘child within’, or the ‘inner child’, remains with us.

Now, cast back your mind to last week or last month; to a point when you were trying to get yourself to do something new, such as a resolution or a change, but somehow and on some level you were resisting this change without knowing consciously why.

Sounds familiar? Consider for a moment that the child within you was rebelling, in fact, you may need to coax it! In such a situation, I suggest you do not analyse; for this rebellious aspect of our personality is child-like and needs to be addressed as such.  In doing so, we are not regressing, nor denying our spiritual growth, or the wisdom that comes with it; quite to the contrary. From my personal experience, the child-like self serves a purpose- helps us to develop creative solutions to everyday problems.

In other words, do not to take yourself and your spiritual growth too seriously. After all, children may not fully understand rational explanations you give them, but if you do involve them in the decision making process, and in a ‘fun’ and creative manner; you can get children to do what you want them to do.

Let’s Get Creative

As children, we are naturally born more intuitive and more creative, with more brain cells- that we start to loose if we do not use them within our first three years. Recent research has also shown that there is a startling reduction in our ability to think creatively as we get older. Are we taking life too seriously? Are we ignoring the child in us? And how do we reconnect with it?

‘Back To The Future’
One way of reconnecting with the child aspect of ourselves, is to connect with children. They will show you how to be a child again. If you think about it, many children dislike being treated as such- perhaps because from a spiritual perspective, they are born ‘older and wiser’.

Children also exhibit certain uncomplicated openness, and they are ready to answer your questions truthfully- the masking we teach ourselves as we get older. In Hans Christian Andresen’s fable of The Emperor’s New Clothes, everyone marvelled at the magnificent magical cloth that swindlers wove for the Emperor, claiming that only those who were worthy would be able to see it- otherwise they were ‘either stupid or unfit for their posts’. No one dared say that the Emperor had nothing on except for a little child who suddenly gasped ‘but he has nothing on’!

Other ‘creative’ ways of dealing with your child-like aspect are to distract it, or to dangle a carrot in front of it. Certainly, try saying what you mean, and meaning what you say. The more you do, the more all aspects of yourself merge together.

Tips for connecting with your child-like self:

  • If the wiser, all intuitive, spiritual aspect of yourself is the higher-self then think of the child-like, or earthly self, as your ‘lower self’. Try to get in touch with it frequently as you do with your ‘higher self’; bridging the two.
  • Spend (more) time around children. Allow a little of that natural innocence and creativity to rub on you.

  • Ask yourself: ‘how interesting am I to children?’ If you can fire a child’s imagination- the chances are you are very much in touch with your lower-self.

  • Be creatively silly. Do something child-like for yourself, or with a child. Fly a kite, colour a poster, read a children’s story, take yourself out for a fun a day. Creative homework of any kind, walking outdoors alone, or reading poetry, will enhance your spiritual creativity channels, so long as you keep your inner eyes and ears open.

  • As you develop your spirituality, consider helping children to develop theirs. Life can be full of magic for a child. Children can understand simple spiritual laws intuitively, and it makes growing up more interesting.

Next month, we will discuss spirituality and what we can learn from children’s fairly tales. Which one’s your favourite? Till then, love, light and healing.
