Dear Sahar,

Can you tell me if I have been reincarnated? Many years ago I dreamt in colour that I was a peasant in Napoleon’s times. I saw myself dressed in a long raggy brown dress with no shoes. Behind me were the men from the village carrying guns on their shoulders. We marched towards a set of very large white doors.

Then I heard one of the men say to me, quick he’s coming, I could hear the soldiers marching towards me. I crouched behind the white doors. Then standing in front of me was Napoleon himself. He took his rifle and shot me. I then woke up. This dream has stayed very fresh to me for many years.  

May I say that I had not read, watched, or been talking about Napoleon before this dream. Please can you tell me why I dreamt this? My friends laugh at me and say, maybe you were Josephine. Please will you try and help me.

In all honesty, it's hard to say why you had that dream? Dreams do express what is going through in our, conscious or unconscious mind. It is the way our brain works and process information even while we are asleep.

There are several things you can do to investigate the meaning of the dream further; without the need to jump to a verdict that it was a past life dream and that your friends are making fun of you. Most of us fear what we do not understand, so do not worry about them! This dream is giving an opportunity to get to know yourself better.

By directing your dreams, that is asking a specific question before going to sleep, and writing the answers down in a dream journal; you will become more familiar with what is on your unconscious mind.

You have to ask yourself, what does Napoleon stand for in your mind, in one word? Your dream could be conflict, triumph, being let down and disappointed (shot in the back); or the need to formulate a strategy (which is what Napoleon was famous for!) .

So, questions you can ask when directing your dreams could be:

- What is the meaning of the dream I had?

- What or who dies Napoleon represent?

- Please give me an insight into my past lives, etc.

Generally, people we dream about also represent an aspect of our persona. Perhaps the "general" in you is letting you down. This could be a dream about you to reveal how you can stop sabotaging or letting yourself down and to start taking charge of your life.
