The Long Winter , a Poem by Teuta Skenderi

I am with the Nomads
crossing a frozen lake
we are so peaceful and happy
and I can feel their eternal tiredness
from carrying the burdens
of snow-covered mountains and
slaughtered animals previously embraced and cried
over
(for they are the Nomads' brothers).
I am holding the Nomad's hand
it is rough and resembles the skin of his yurta
with lines and wrinkles all over it- they all tell
a story
of bloody childbirths, Snow Queen's revenge
and the Midnight Sun.
It is rough, but soft and gentle at the same time
It gives me strength for my journey.
Nomad's wife is pregnant
she is blessed and she feels she is carrying a
manchild
all the childhood lullabies are entering her
dreams now
her eyes are wide open and look like the ones of a
wolf.
She puts my hand on her belly to feel the
movements
of her lovechild... I feel blessed to enter their
circle of life.
We are in their yurta now, the dogs are tired and
their shining eyes
are human
Everything is silent
We can only hear each- other's breathing and the
crackling of the
fire
We are sharing the food and thanking the gods for
the gifts of life
while the spirits of the animals and the ancestors
are hovering above
us.
Their smiles are so inviting and reassuring... the
snow storm outside
tells us the winter is not over yet...
I am in the cradle of humanity
drinking warm milk from a wooden bowl
my heart is almost frozen
but their smiles keep melting the ice
There are no windows here, but I can see the world
in their eyes...
They are closed now, for they have fallen asleep
but I cannot
I am outside now challenging the Snow Queen
my tears are cold and icy
I feel like screaming but I don't want to break
the perfect harmony of white and midnight blue
I had a glimpse of eternal winter
humbleness and divinity...
