A University of Sheffield student has designed a bicycle that can pump water
upto 26 metres high. MEng student from the Department of Mechanical Engineering
at Sheffield, Jon Leary, went to Guatemala to `make something useful out of
rubbish.´ as part of his dissertation.
Working with Guatemalan NGO Maya Pedal, a bicycle company that is
sent all manner of discarded bicycles from the USA and Canada, Jon set to work
to create a water pump that would be both powered and transported by bicycle.
The bicycle powered pump is now in production at the factory and is being used
for general water distribution and irrigation.
