Tips for Getting the Most Out of Your Nutrition
By Karen Clickner

Karen Clickner completed her early training in naturopathy and practical herbal therapy 25 years ago in Spain. Since that time, she has become certified as a colonic hydrotherapist, myofascial therapist and continued her study of practical herbal therapy through the Australian College of Phytotherapy. She has taught throughout the United States and Europe and her articles have been featured in various publications including AMTA Journals.

In order to derive the maximum effect from your concentrated nutrition and herbal therapy, there are some things to remember about taking your protocol.

* There are many types of foods that can interact with and interfere with the effectiveness of oral therapy. One of the most noted is grapefruit and grapefruit juice. Grapefruit interacts with an enzyme, found mostly in the lining of the digestive tract that breaks down toxic substances, including drugs.

If you consume grapefruit, for 24 hours or more, this essential enzyme will not be available to interact with any drug that you are taking, so your system may experience a larger than anticipated amount of the drug reaching your system. For this reason, you should refrain from any supplementation that contains substantial amounts of grapefruit or grapefruit extract in the formula if also taking any type of drug.

* Food is always the best medicine, even in a concentrated form. However, your diet is essential for health to be restored. Even though you may be receiving concentrated food forms such as SP Green Food, SP Complete, Nutrimere or Protefood, does not mean that the whole food you are eating at each meal is unimportant. In fact, it is more important to allow the body to recognize the nutrients in food as well as to activate your body's natural digestive process for nutrition.

* Vitamins and minerals are very different even though they are contained together in food. Your body generally needs vitamins every day as they are not easily stored and are easily eliminated, while minerals are stored throughout the body's soft tissues and so can produce toxicity if accumulated in large amounts. Trace Mineral Hair Analysis can tell you which minerals are a problem as well as which minerals are not reaching target tissues. So please refrain from taking any additional supplements during the time you on a protocol.

* Whole food nutrition is not the same as fractionated single section vitamins and minerals. This means that whole food calcium requires much less for complete absorption than synthetically-derived calcium or calcium carbonate for instance. So 1000 mg of calcium carbonate will give you less tissue calcium than 250 mg of whole food calcium.

* Dosages play an important role in supporting healthy change in the body. There is a difference between a physiologic dose and a pharmacologic dose. Dosages of smaller amounts over an extended period of time are better than one large dose. It may take up to four weeks to notice a change and longer if the problem involves tissue regeneration such as a skin issue.

* Dosage Times : Supplements to be taken with meals means either during the meal or directly after eating. Supplements to be taken between meals are to be taken at least two hours on either side of food. If, however, you experience stomach distress after taking the supplements, take a small snack with them. Herbs are generally to be taken on an empty stomach 15-30 minutes before food unless indicated. This is particularly true of digestive herbs. Anti-parasitics work best on an empty stomach in cyclical patterns of ten days on and ten days off.

* Cytosol extracts ending in “ex” are water-soluble formulas taken from the cytoplasm of the cell and provide essential precursors for cellular function. They are designed to be temporary food sources to increase glandular activity. Cytosol extracts should not be used longer than 3-4 months. Take 1 every 2 hours for the first day.

* Whole dessicated products are designed for short term critical use, no more than 4-6 weeks to prevent glandular dependence and atrophy common with long term use.

* Protomorphagenic compounds (any product with PMG) have very variable dosages depending on the severity of the condition and the ability of the body to handle the changes without experiencing a histamine reaction. Dosages should begin at 2 per day and increase every other day until full amounts are reached. Should a histamine reaction occur, return to the previous dosage and maintain.

* Animal Tissues and Product Safety
When Dr. Lee founded Standard Process in 1929, the first whole food supplement he released was Catalyn®. Catalyn and some of the other Standard Process products contain animal tissues (organs, glands, or extracts thereof ). The reason for this is because our own bodies contain numerous safeguards to prevent drugs and other toxic substances from interacting with our body physiology. Animal tissues are easily assimilated and accepted by the body and so are one of the only effective methods to naturally treat glandular issues. Dr. Lee believed that every issue was a glandular issue in some form making bovine cellular components essential as part of effective raw natural nutrition to treat dysfunction at a cellular level. In fact, throughout history, humans have consumed animal tissues as part of the healing process (think of your grandmother's chicken soup... bones and all).

Liver, kidney, heart, bone... all were eaten in various ways, making hepatitis, bladder infections, heart attacks and arthritis much less prevelent that they are in today's society. I believe that this is one of the missing components in our diets today that explains the fact that 2 out of every 3 people are developing serious illness before the age of 60.

Dr. Lee believed that, "The quality of a whole food supplement is dependent on the quality of the manufacturing process." This remains the foundation of the Standard Process doctrine today, and it is applied especially to the animal tissues that are used in many Standard Process products. Standard Process manufactures its whole food supplements in its own facility in Palmyra, Wisconsin. For more information on the safety of the tissues used, please see their website.
